How much screen time is too much for kids in India?

Title: How much screen time is too much for kids in India?

Every Indian parent has had this moment — your child reaches for your phone before they've even finished breakfast, and you wonder if this is normal, or if you're already behind.

The truth is, there's no single right answer. Pediatric guidelines generally suggest very limited or no screen time for children under 2, and for ages 2 to 5, short, supervised sessions of high-quality content rather than open-ended scrolling. But in real Indian households — with online classes, family WhatsApp video calls, and YouTube rhymes during meals — the lines blur fast.

What matters more than the exact number of minutes is the pattern. Is screen time replacing sleep, play, or conversation? Is your child calm after, or do they melt down the moment the screen turns off? Those reactions often tell you more than any clock ever will.

A few small things that have helped many parents:

  • Fixed "screen times" rather than screens-on-demand
  • Active alternatives nearby — building blocks, coloring books, simple puzzles — so switching off doesn't feel like punishment
  • Watching together sometimes, so screen time becomes shared time, not isolated time

There's no perfect formula here. But small, consistent boundaries tend to work better than dramatic one-day rules.

What's worked for your family? I'd love to hear in the comments.
